Use
gretl and the “DC Crime” dataset to answer the following questions.
The
level of observation in this dataset is at the census block level.
1.
Estimate the mean for the variables bus_stop and nightlife.
2.
Create a new variable named school_present that equals 0 if no schools are
present and equals 1 if any schools are present. Estimate the proportion of
blocks where a school is present.
3.
Create a new variable named highyoung that equals 0 if less than 25% of the
block’s population is between ages 18 and 29 and equals 1 if 25% or more of a
block’s population is between ages 18 and 29. Estimate the proportion of blocks
where more than 25% of the population is between ages 18 and 29.
4.
Calculate 95 % confidence intervals for the mean for the variables bus_stop and
nightlife.
5.
Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of blocks where a school
is present.
6.
Graph a frequency distribution for the variable school_present. Graph a
frequency distribution for the variable highyoung. Which variable is more
evenly distributed?
7.
Graph an estimated density for the variable bus_stop. Graph an estimated
density for the variable nightlife. Which variable’s distribution is more
skewed and in which direction?
8.
Test the hypothesis that the mean number of bus_stops per square mile is
greater than 75. Use a 5% level of significance.
9.
Test the hypothesis that the mean number of bus_stops per square mile is less
than 82. Use a 5% level of significance.
10.
Test the hypothesis that the proportion of blocks with a school present is less
than 0.50. Use a 5% level of significance.
